Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Published Monday 20 December 2010 at 12:10 by Ben Dowell

EastEnders actress Madeline Duggan doesn’t deliver the most charismatic Snow White in pantomime history. And the production overall seems to be thin on acting (and when it does come it’s pretty thin) and very heavy on the interminable celebrity gags (which are more and more the stuff of moden pantos).

But as an excuse for a lot (and I mean a lot) of X Factor-style singing it’s colourful and fun enough to entertain the young ‘uns.

Andrew Fleming’s Muddles proves quite a draw - both as a singer and comic touch. Nicole Faraday as the bad Queen is bosomy and fun and when she sings a full throated Get this Party Started number she actually does that for a production which, without her on stage relies a little too much on colourful visuals. It’s a great big Snow White this, cartoony sweeps on stage, bubble gum toy castles and dwarves with enormous colourful heads.

Duggan is pretty enough and proves she has a more then serviceable voice. But she seems to speak her lines aloud with not very much acting at all. She may as well be reading the phone directory and at £17 per adult it’s not asking for the world to demand a bit more oomph.
