Arbroath may be a small coastal town where a night beside the sea in the current wintry conditions will not feature on anyone’s wish list. But, although snow white on the outside, indoors this Philip Meeks-inspired panto proves to be an ideal tonic.
Small-time theatre it may be, but the patrons are certainly not being short-changed, as this show includes lots of fun, music, dancing (choreographed by Sallie Warrington), opulent costumes and set design.
This is traditional fare (yes, even the jokes) and the kids are encouraged to participate right from the start.
This is due mainly to David Paisley as Chuckles, the jester, an inspired ‘daftie’. Writer, director and dame, Philip Meeks, romps through the evening in a range of crazy costumes.
Scottish soap star Lorna Anderson shows good vocal command as Snow White, with David Rankine in fine, dashing mode as her prince.
Peter Tilly certainly manufactures plenty of boos as McSnarl, the Queen’s henchman, but it is the nasty Queen Malicia who steals the show - Donna Hazelton (2004 winner of Channel 4’s Musicality and former Mama Morton) has the wow factor on her every appearance.
This is a tight-knit team effort, with the cast joined by eight female singers and dancers and local children as the cutest dwarfs.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
