What a consummate panto performer is multi-talented Mike Doyle. As Robinson, he sparks a response from children that has to be heard to be believed - definitely deafening decibels. His powerful singing encourages instant hand-clapping, his jokey delivery never goes over the heads of young audience members, and his comic business is funny, but not patronisingly silly.
Combining romantically with Doyle is Rhian Griffith as the sweet, but very spirited Polly.
This is Richard Tunley’s seventh panto with the company. Besides directing, he clearly relishes his role as the blustering pirate Bluebeard, well earning the tide of boos that engulf him. Ian Lilley projects a macho gravel-voiced Mrs Crusoe, while Llinos Daniel scores highly as Miley the mermaid, southern belle from Tennessee - a blonde bombshell, indeed.
Sam Davies’ Konga, the all-dancing amorous Gorilla is a sure-fire laughter-raiser, with strong support from Phil Howe as Captain Perkins and Sule Rimi as Man Friday. The UV underwater ballet is a visual delight, with puppetry.
Musical director on keyboards is Ian Kimber, with Wyn Davies on bass and Ben Richards on drums. The tour also visits Brecon, Carmarthen and Port Talbot, each venue featuring teams from local dance academies.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
