Just a glance through the programme for Peppa Pig’s Party reveals how the BAFTA-winning TV programme - mainly seen in the UK on the Nick Jr channel - has not just become increasingly popular with pre-school children, but also with those producing the spin-off DVDs, video games, toys and confectionery.
Ultimately, however, no piece of merchandising is going to be more exciting for under-fives than an opportunity to see their favourite characters in action. While writer/director Richard Lewis’ production could do with a little trimming, he and designer Simon Scullion perfectly create the charming world of Peppa Pig, her little brother George, and Mummy and Daddy Pig.
To tell the story of Peppa’s birthday party, complete with cake-making, train ride, nature trail and, of course, jumping up and down in muddy puddles, cast members cleverly play their roles using a range of puppets. Their expertise in doing so means that the children simply accept their presence on stage and believe in the characters they operate. Phil Adele, Kerry Gooderson, Philip Simon and Keddy Sutton should also be praised for their brilliant voice work. Tying the interactive narrative and regular bursts of dance and song together is the likeable human Daisy, enthusiastically played by Charlotte Sullivan.
Peppa Pig’s Party is taking a break from an extensive tour to makes its West End debut at the Criterion.
