The Octagon’s Christmas show is a treat for all ages, packed full of the right seasonal ingredients - a tremendous story, stirring tunes, merriment and pathos. Deborah McAndrew’s new adaptation does full justice to the crowded narrative, and a hugely talented ensemble of actor-musicians brings to life the galaxy of rich characters that Charles Dickens created.

Geoffrey Breton, who first made a name for himself as Ben Trotter, in The Rotters’ Club on the BBC, once again plays the sensitive lad trying to make sense of the world. He gives a memorable performance in the title role, narrating his own story at the same time as he is breathlessly caught up in it.
Ever-versatile Ruth Alexander Rubin does sterling work as David’sß aunt and improbable guardian, the indomitable Betsy Trotwood. Her even more dotty companion, Mr Dick, is done to a nice turn by Lloyd Gorman. And Clara Darcy simpers suitably as David’s first wife, Dora, temporarily blinding him to the greater attractions of Agnes, nicely understated by Barbara Hockaday.
Tobias Beer is convincingly menacing as Mr Murdstone, the cruel stepfather, and resolutely optimistic as Mr Micawber - never more so than at the centre of a joyous Gilbert and Sullivan-style homage to the pleasures of punch. This production certainly packs one!
