Babbacombe shows invariably spin along at a cracking pace, but this production has to rank as one of the slickest so far from the theatre on the Downs.
The show embraces Christmas, delivering just the right sprinkling of seasonal cheer without wallowing in sentimental overkill.
Regular mirth-meister Andy Oakley is on cracking form with his quickfire humour and fine voice.
Whether it is duetting with Paul Cobley as Sgt Major and Lofty in Whispering Grass, or in his own stand-up slots, Oakley’s presence is a sheer delight.
Babbacombe newcomer Lee Goode has a tough act to follow as a comedian, but his excellent impression of Louis Armstrong singing ‘Wonderful World’ suggested there was much material to be mined in impressions.
Soul singer Ruby Washington makes a welcome return with her sassy, nightclub pizzazz, as does Lisa Walker whose strong vocals help open the show with a gyrating up-tempo ‘All I want For Christmas’.
Paul Cobley’s rich voice is always an asset to the programme, as is his light comedy touch.
Peter Baffles conjures up a wry blend of magical ineptitude then delights in dazzling us with logic-defying set pieces such as his invisible card trick.
A talent to watch is Lily Laight, aged eight, who earned her place by having been a successful contender in the Torbay’s Got Talent competition.
The evening is propelled by Colin Matthews’ exacting direction. Georgia Lee’s innovative choreography is delivered with impressive panache by dynamic dance troupe Danze Fantazy.
