In the distant future where musical instruments have been banned, a team of rebels wait in hope for the chosen one who will rediscover rock ‘n’ roll.
Despite receiving mostly scathing reviews when the show opened eight years ago, We Will Rock You has established itself as one of the West End’s official long-runners, regularly playing to packed houses.
Ben Elton’s plot remains woefully thin and despite minor changes to character names to keep it fresh, the whole remains a limp, excruciating excuse to string together an albeit choice selection of Queen songs.
For instance Simon Cowell is credited with the destruction of musical individualism and yet this current review owes itself to the very fact that X Factor finalist, Brenda Edwards is appearing for a ten-week stint.
Irony aside, if you are a very, very big fan of Queen, then perhaps this is the show for you. Arlene Phillips’ choreography is kept fresh thanks to Giorgia Barberi’s role as resident choreographer and Tim Goodchild’s costumes remain inventive and striking.
Peter Murphy as Galileo and Sabrina Aloueche as Scaramouche attack their roles with verve but the act is beginning to look a little routine.
Indeed the stage only really comes to life with the arrival of Ian Carlyle as the lively Bohemian Brit.
Brenda Edwards as the Killer Queen strikes the right poses, makes the right noises and gives lots of attitude and if this is your idea of musical theatre, then her career is safeguarded for the future.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
