The Wizard of Oz

This is an ambitious production with just a cast of seven principals, but their combined talents, teamwork and enthusiasm make this a most enjoyable Wizard of Oz. At just under two hours and with plenty of audience participation and the traditional ghost scene to add to the fun, it works well.

The opening scene set in Kansas is followed by a very effective projected Tornado, which heralds Dorothy’s arrival in Munchkinland. Adults can then enjoy a delightful Eric Morecambe segment, expertly performed by Clive Flint as Eric, the King of the Munchkins. He has the voice and mannerisms to make this really work.

Julian Eardley camps up the Cowardly Lion superbly, Jack Cassidy is an energetic Scarecrow and Jack Corcoran makes a real impact as the Tin Man. Kali Hughes is a gem as the Wicked Witch of the West and she really rocks in the Witch’s Lair production number. The Emerald City is another really strong production routine. Serena Giacomini is an exquisite Dorothy and she shines vocally in her major song. With some excellent special effects this is another commendable Winchester Christmas production.
