The Twits

John Trent Wallace’s original music for Brentwood’s show, based on Roald Dahl’s story, is a mixture of zany chase-style and musical theatre.

Filthy, disgusting Mr and Mrs Twit (a gloating Christopher Yesdi Jefferies and unpleasant Kate Ankers) enjoy bamboozling audiences, and relish playing tricks on each other with putrid results.

The simian Mugglewumps kidnapped by cruel Mr Twit and forced to perform, are played with character and flexibility by Leigh Stevenson and Jennifer Skapeti. Naomi Shields is eyecatching as lively, tiny Baby Mugglewump. Popping up all over the place is genial Narrator Stephen Gunshon.

Jessica Rose is helpful bird Fluster, with artificial birds roosting on her arms. Jenanne Redman is glittering as Roly Poly Bird with green plumes designed by Tara Bartell. Other costumes are by Joy Dunn.

To get the best circus skills the cast had individual tuition from aerialist Natalie Verhaegen, whose career began with amateur teenage acting at Brentwood.

This small studio Big Top has a colourful, detailed set by scenic artist Megan Hunt including a miniaturised Twit bedroom and its upside down opposite.

Director Vernon Keeble Watson has come up with an entertaining, far less frenetic alternative to panto with loads of audience participation for everyone.
