Yet another triumph for the highly-acclaimed Forest Forge Theatre Company and, once again, it has discovered a group of five entertainers who have boundless energy, both acting and musical skills, and for whom teamwork is the essence. No time for inflated egos in this type of production.
This is both a cleverly written and presented show, with writer David Haworth being inspired by the original Brothers Grimm tale. Just when you think some key aspects of the more traditional story are missing, they turn up. There are some brilliant special effects, which include one or two unexpectedly blood-thirsty scenes and a superb finale that rekindles memories of Alfred Hitchcock. It’s also quite remarkable how many uses a single rectangular frame on a stand can be adapted for. The split screen moments add to the realism of this production.
Becky Barry, Lila Clements and Kyra Williams are a formidable trio with nine roles between them. Their musical talents, narration skills and depth of acting capabilities earn their due rewards. Nicholas Goode is excellent as the not so humble Prince and the Father, for which he is a little more endearing than some Baron Hardups. Sophie Winter is very effective as Ashputtel and has more transformation scenes than normal.
There is so much to enjoy in this touring show that is full of surprises, quality performances, enjoyable music, visual splendour and hard-working entertainers.
