Dick Whittington

In a delicious twist to the traditional plot, Michael Vinsen’s Dick Whittington finally proposes to Sally Sparrow, the absolutely smashing Cockney flower seller. Well, we all knew that he would, but we were just a little bit concerned he might, as usual, plump for Tanya Robb’s dastardly Alice Fitzwarren. In this version she is devilishly attractive, but also rather devious. She tries to scheme Whittington’s downfall along with Graham Lappin’s superbly seductive King Rat. Robb’s performance simmers and sizzles.

Ruthie Stephenson excels as Sally and steers the plot along. Her rapport with the audience is immediate and she ensures that Whittington is always aware he is fulfilling the promise of a legend.

Jay Webb, in the Silly Billy role, stirs the knockabout comedy along. Duncan Smith gives fine comic support as Alderman Fitzwarren.

A simply staged but very effective 3D shipwreck sequence is great fun, with everything being tossed off the ship and at the audience. The sets are colourful, as is usually the case at this venue, but the usually reliable dancing is strangely lacklustre.
