Firsts 09 - Programme 2: Count One/Muualla-Elsewhere/An Orthodox 1-2/Lovedrunk

Published Wednesday 25 November 2009 at 11:45 by Liz Arratoon

ROH2 has put together another eclectic programme, with a strong mixed media flavour, for the second in its season of emerging talents.

Count One, choreographed by Nicola Conibere and co-created/performed by Taylan Halici, Helka Kaski, Florence Peake and Theron Schmidt, explores gestures, such as a handshake or an embrace, that cause a reaction. The concept of repeated sequences being augmented each time with a new interaction is interesting, but a more playful feel might make it more accessible.

Tilanne’s Muualla-Elsewhere, an innovative mix of animation, circus and dance - is a collaboration between architect/animator Tuula Jeker and slender circus artist/choreographer Ilona Jantti. With Jeker’s stylish and graphic animated designs forming an interactive backdrop for Jantti’s effortlessly elegant moves on ropes, and great music by Tuomas Norvio, it is instantly engaging. Circus skills creep in everywhere these days, but this is so fresh and the result is a sublime success.

An Unorthodox 1-2 is a bit like a gig with added film images. Aurelie, a music and performance group, have chosen Barrow Football Club as their subject. They edit, sample and layer spoken word, music and sound to capture the aural atmosphere of a match day. Fans of the club will identify with this piece more readily than most.

El Toro Theatre Company has selected excerpts from its new show, Lovedrunk - an emotional piece about loving someone who doesn’t love you. Performed by Andy Godfrey, it blends theatre, video and music - from bands such as CocoRosie, the Korgis, Joy Division and Nirvana - and effectively conveys the desolation of lost love.
