Moby Dick

Published Friday 25 September 2009 at 11:35 by Caroline Morris

Renowned for their extraordinary offbeat style of storytelling and performing, Spymonkey and Moby Dick, in the hands of director Jos Houben, present us with another fabulous creation.

A wonderful mix of glimpses of Tommy Cooper-style humour and Cirque du Soleil presentation, this is the story of Moby Dick like no other. The audience is rarely without a smile from ear to ear, more often than not outbursts of laughter.

The four performers Aitor Basauri, Petra Massey, Toby Park and Stephan Kreiss, go to extreme acting and physical lengths with their characters, often leaving the audience aghast and exhausted just watching.

Stealing the show is Aitor Basauri as Ishmael, the often Manuel-like character, hankering after true love. Close behind is Stephan Kreiss as the cannibal harpoonist from Bavaria, with his hilarious physical feats - absolutely brilliant.

I am not sure whether Toby Park is Captain Ahab or Abraham Lincoln, but his outbursts of melodrama display outstanding timing.

Petra Massey has her moment of glory as the mermaid figurehead who wants to get pregnant.

However, the sudden appearance of a community choir singing Bright Eyes spoils an otherwise truly brilliant show.
