Newly-engaged Brad and Janet cross the path of the evil transvestite alien, Dr Frank N Furter on the night he plans to bring to life his latest creation to life.
For those who have been out of the loop for the past 30 years, Richard O’Brien’s cult rock’n’roll musical is still packing houses throughout the UK. The success of the current production, which began life in 2006 is due in no small part to the marriage of strong production values, a still loyal fan base and finally a bravura performance by the wonderful David Bedella as Frank.
Haley Flaherty and Mark Evans make a superb Brad and Janet, with their duet Once in a While remaining one of the often overlooked - as it was never in the movie - musical highlights in the show. Ceris Hine taps her heart out making a lively and likeable Columbia, while Kara Lane and Brian McCann are excellent as the sinister siblings Magenta and Riff Raff.
Dominic Tribuzio makes a lively, excitable Rocky and Nathan Amzi is perfect in the dual role of Eddie and Dr Scott. Steve Pemberton, now an old hand in the role of the Narrator, works his patter well and keeps a boisterous audience well under control. In the end however, it is Bedella who rules the roost, bringing a fresh intensity to such a famous role with his rich, bass vocals and mellifluous delivery.
Janet Bird’s settings remain imaginative and fun as do Sue Blane’s sharp, clean costume designs, both complementing Christopher Luscombe’s witty, slick direction.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
