The Game of Murder

Published Thursday 10 September 2009 at 13:40 by Robin Duke

There are times when even the most ardent lover of thrillers, murder mysteries and whodunnits must long for a few less bumpings off in the night and a little more logic to the proceedings.

That could be why this potpourri of a plot has not toured for 18 years and why, at times, it seems like a red herring out of water.

Why refer to mobile phones as being new on the scene when no one has one? Even in the nineties did we feel safe letting random strangers into our house? And who, on hearing she could well end up murdered, decides to go back to bed then start cooking the Christmas dinner before heading for the hills?

So suspend your belief higher then the holly and you might be alright - assuming Nick Dutton’s grunting mute Billy doesn’t annoy you so much you’re inclined to shout out, “Do him in next.”

EastEnders and Hollyoaks bad girl Gemma Bissix makes good in her first stage role but - hoping it wasn’t because she wanted to jolly things along - she’s going to have to slow down the dialogue if any script analysts in the audience want to fully keep up with her.

Fellow television face Charlie Kemp has a dramatic hill to climb converting from serial adulterer to latent gay - only running out of breath (and credibility) when the final scene tries to sew up a multitude of loose ends.

That leaves Ross Hugill whose sinister and conniving Mark Brown is like a Pinter character planted into a Christie plot.
