The Silver Darlings

Condensing Neil M Gunn’s epic novel The Silver Darlings into a two hour play is not a task for the faint-hearted, particularly when it is to be staged in Aberdeen, so close to the formidable grey coast that is at the heart of the novel.

Dramatist Peter Arnott has risen to the challenge creating a piece of theatre that should please both Gunn purists and the broader theatre-going audience.

The Silver Darlings is set on the north coast of Scotland after the Highland Clearances. The story follows the relationships of an ordinary family as they struggle to make a living from the sea.

Directed by Kenny Ireland, designed by Hayden Griffin and with lighting by John Harris, this creative team, who worked on APA’s debut production Sunset Song, has embraced the atmosphere of the novel. Griffin’s use of projected images is more established than in Sunset Song, enhancing the production, rather than distracting from the action.

The production is well-paced and packed with action with Finn, played skilfully by Finn Den Hertog, taking the heroic role in the midst of the seafaring drama. This character is comparable to the seafaring heroes of Greek mythology, which fits neatly with Ireland’s use of a storytelling chorus.

The chorus guides the audience through the narrative and makes comment on the action and characters. This is a great tool - adding humour and keeping the story moving on. It is also a nice tie in to the Scottish storytelling traditions.

This ensemble cast, particularly Meg Fraser, Tom McGovern and Ann Louise Ross, give energetic, convincing performances switching from humour to pathos with ease.

After an inconspicuous start with Sunset Song, this creative team and cast have fused to produce a confident and memorable piece of theatre.
