Tom Tom Crew

Here’s an engaging troupe of seven young Aussies who have cleverly mixed their cutting-edge skills into a sort of full-on, hip hop circus club night (well, hour).

Energetic drummer Ben Walsh kicks off the show. He’s energetic on a kit made from large plastic chemical drums, but is far more interesting when he unveils his vintage Omnichord.

There are four incredibly fit acrobats, clad in jeans or cut-offs and vests, which they later shed to reveal their honed six-packs. Graduates of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus School, they carry their talent lightly while executing somersaults, spins and balances. Ben Lewis and Shane Witt are electric on straps and they end up trampolining on teeterboard with Daniel Catlow and Tom Flanagan. But impressive as their moves are, there is nothing new for regular circus-goers.

DJ Sampology is a tremendous mixer, scratcher and sampler, but it is the virtuosic beatboxer Tom Thum who really sends everyone wild. No need for sound effects or instruments if he’s around, as he can make any noise he wants to using just his voice and a mic. He even creates a whole jazz band with the help of a Kaoss Pad. It is a sublime combination of technology and sheer vocal dexterity.

So often, Australian shows attract the word ‘raw’. Tom Tom Crew’s crew are a bit rough and ready, but they get a standing ovation from the full house - surprisingly not just made up of young people - which clearly loves them.
