Angelina Ballerina’s Big Audition brings the storybook character back to the stage once more in this new production from English National Ballet, aimed at three to eight year-olds with a passion for dance.
Here we follow the mouse as she prepares for an audition at the prestigious Camembert Academy, meeting old and new friends along the way.
The first act is very much storybook style, easy to follow and with mainly traditional ballet. The highlight is dancer James Henson with his lively characterization of Henry.
Act II is very different - not only much longer, but much more colourful in its variety of dance and particularly ensemble pieces.
Outstanding is the suitcase dance and the scene when Angelina and her six counterparts audition. Stealing the show is Monika Lepisto as Angelina with her Sugar Plum Fairy dance and James Henson as AJ with his brilliant and invigorating hip hop moves.
Antony Dowson has wonderfully choreographed the ballet with a delightful simplicity. The orchestration of both music by Tchaikovsky and original material by Gavin Sutherland brings an engaging lightness to the ballet.
Wizzy Shawyer has created colourful costumes and mouse heads which makes the characters easy to identify, while allowing freedom of movement for the dancers.
Artistic director Wayne Eagling has yet another huge success on his hands, which is like to be a hit a young audiences the length and breadth of the UK and beyond.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
