New Works

Published Friday 15 May 2009 at 11:55 by Gavin Roebuck

Non-linear Interactions by Viacheslav Samodurov was a thrilling and well crafted piece for six dancers. The deepest piece of the evening, interestingly it explored stream of consciousness thoughts, emotions and ideas with a beautiful sense of line, proportion, shape and choreographic development. With transforming interactions, this is a thoughtful work for our time.

Kristen McNally expanded her amusing and clever Yes We Did from an showing earlier in the year. Exploring the idea of change in the American presidential election, she had James Wilkie stroll on clothed in a stars and stripes flag borrowed from 10 Downing Street.

The opening work was a short piece by Christopher Hampson, inspired and dedicated to Norman Morrice, former director of the Royal Ballet.

To lightweight, almost filmic music, Ludovic Ondiviela created a pleasing work Recordato, exploring identity and memories.

Les Lutins was a sparking piece of choreography by Johan Kobborg, with lots of light, complex beaten jumps and mischievous humour for three dancers.

Now by Jonathan Watkins has a lyrical undercurrent as the seven dancers try to relish the present rather than look to the past or future.

More restrained than passionate, Consolations and Liebestraum by Liam Scarlett is a work that could be developed and expanded further.

The dedication of the artists to New Works is laudable in spite of the many difficulties of finding time within their existing obligations. Lit by Simon Bennison, with live music including an exciting young virtuoso violinist Charlie Siem, it’s a good value ticket.
