It’s the week after the 2008 Republican Convention, and the US media are clamouring over Sarah Palin causing Obama to lose his head and drop back 20 points in the national polls. This is the story of how a small team of press and PR people did their bit to push Obama back into first place. Teddy Hayes’ gentle comedy starts well, opening with the number Piggy with a Lipstick, satirising how the Democrat saw Palin. After this the show becomes something quite different, with a storyline that might lead one to assume that the Democratic headquarters are based on Sesame Street.
A few performances are worth watching, especially Christopher Dingli, who makes the most of his song Money and Ellen Verenieks as a housewife struggling to find job satisfaction as her private life falls about her. Victoria Croft pitches her role just right, strutting her stuff as the office vamp offering a cop A Little Something Extra.
Obama On My Mind is a good idea but needs a more mature treatment than it receives here. Tim McArthur’s direction features some witty choreography but has very little substance on which to hang this show.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
