With the style and grace expected of any production of Swan Lake, Ellen Kent’s latest incarnation of the classic tale of love and jealousy takes things to a whole new level of staged, dance magic as beautiful sets, fabulous costumes and subtle lighting all combine with the efforts of an impeccable cast that delivers with effortless ease.
Husband and wife team Kristina and Alexei Terentiev gel so well together in their effortless command of the stage, it is as though they were born dancing together. Terentieva’s Odile especially is as captivating as it is poised.
Superb too is Roman Taranenko’s delightfully malevolent Baron von Rothbart who’s black-winged swooping and diving adds a sense of the surreal to proceedings without ever over-egging the pudding, whereas Andriy Kozarezov’s Clown brings light relief and poignancy in equal measures to ensure credibility.
Yet, it is young Anna Griffin’s one night only debut on behalf of the Make A Wish Foundation who steals the show as the 12 year old, osteosarcoma sufferer encapsulates everything a fairy tale should be.
Overall some superb corps pieces and the tightness of Vitaliy Kutsenko’s conducting make this a work of some achievement that is sure to delight even the sternest of critics.
