Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Published Wednesday 14 January 2009 at 11:20 by Barbara Champion

With reliable collective talent working such a modern and funny script, this family show is a sure winner. The action and laughs are immediate and fast.

Niamh Perry would be most girls’ ideal Snow White and sings beautifully about her perfectly cast Prince Simon, played by confident Stefan Booth. There are accomplished vocals from both. Martyn Knight, outrageously dressed, enjoys himself as Dame Delores Dingbat and enthralls the children.

Carl Patrick is a riot of laughter as Herbie Vor, the vegetarian Huntsman. He is never still and the kids love his rapping, murderous acting and the accidental shooting of a backstage crewman, who is later resurrected. Patrick is also teamed with Knight in a creative wash-up scene.

Nicole Faraday is nicely spiteful as Queen Narcissia and Shona White is special as Fairy Goodapple. Deborah Lamb’s likeable seven Dwarfs are different and the ensemble dancers are kept busy with Tara Wilkinson’s choreography.

There is an abundance of good ideas, clever scenery and bits of business for all ages. Robert Cousins leads his groovy band, costumes are colourful, the mirror features well and the Abba mix and the gold and red finale are splendid. Excellent family entertainment.
