The Sherman has long established an enviable reputation for all the family relevant plays that provide an alternative to Christmas pantomime. The latest offering of this Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale certainly maintains that high standard. Anna Linstrum’s pacey direction, full of visual effects, ensures there are lots of imaginative contrasts in both style and mood as the cold-hearted Queen cocks a snoot at global warming by aiming to bring about a permanent Ice Age. The seasonal transformations designed by Chloe Lamford are particularly impressive. The story-telling is unashamedly out front with Lynn Hunter as Grandma firmly setting the scene.
Sue Appleby as young Gerda reveals appealing determination in her search for abducted school chum Cei (Liam Lane). Her meetings with a whole parade of bizarre characters give her lessons in life that visibly add to her self-awareness and maturity. Anna Mountford in the title role has the necessary commanding presence, combining an air of mystery with subtle menace. Amid much doubling, Nathan Sussex provides a powerful Mr Overskou, Claire Sundin a fluttery Princess, James Russell a rather jolly Prince and Amy Starling a quite delightful Snow Drop. The sound design is by Stefan Podolczuk, lighting by Ace McCarron.
