Aladdin

Published Monday 29 December 2008 at 15:50 by Tony Mallion

This Aladdin is everything a good pantomime should be, as traditional as seaside rock yet bang up to date with 21st century songs and topical gags.

Hunstanton is a small theatre with a big reputation for its annual show and this one never disappoints or flags. Participation is the key in a show which is more like a workout given the number of times the audience is asked to bob up and down. But then no-one can get bored for a second with fast action, plenty of big production numbers and colour co-ordinated sets and costumes which are a constant feast for the eye - all miraculously achieved on a stage which has minimal depth and wing space.

The magic starts the moment Alastair Natkiel opens the show as a wicked Abanazer with some wicked one liners. David Wilson’s bright performance has the kids on side and there’s nothing Wishee Washee about his powerful singing voice. Leona Marie as Aladdin also has a terrific vocal range. Craig Cowdroy carries the whole show as a totally straight Widow Twankey with garish make-up, outlandish costumes and a script which succeeds without so much as a single entendre.
