Don John

Published Friday 19 December 2008 at 11:10 by Peta David

This is Don Juan revisited with a seventies twist. Gisli Orn Gardarsson is a brooding, edgy, back street Don John. In his black boots, he cruises the streets for girls to conquer whilst his sidekick, the sleazy Nobby, played by Mike Shepherd, takes photos of each of the girls and tries to patch up the trail of broken hearts along the way.

Set in the back streets of an urban metropolis, in a container yard with a garish fairground sign in the distance, is the perfect playground for this Don John and he holds nothing back in his pursuit of sexual gratification.

Each new scene is cleverly boxed up into one of the containers and pushed out into the middle of the stage. As it is opened up we can see a mini drama unravelling or a party unfolding. It is then boxed up again and pushed away. Inevitably we see the cost of Don John’s womanising and the emotional impact he has on the girls he comes in contact with, including Anna the sexually pent-up Vicar’s wife, played by Nina Dogg Filippusdottir, Zerlina the bride to be, played by Patrycja Kujawska and Elvira, who believes she can save Don John from himself, played to perfection by Mary Woodvine.
