A happy, Abba, feel-good aura pervades this bright, seasonal offering, with their hand- clapping songs adding extra lift to Richard Tunley’s pacey staging. The storyline of good triumphing over evil is as clear and uncluttered as it should be, though the time-honoured panto routines with their much indulged responses receive plenty of airing. The ever-popular Mike Doyle bustles about as the cheeky tongue-twisted Muddles, establishing instant rapport with the youngsters, but also leaving space for a touching line of pathos. Lloyd Davies works well with him as Nurse Tydfil, a tough cookie indeed with the proverbial heart of gold.
Nikki Lang’s Queen Lucretia is as nasty a piece of work as can be found in fairy tale land, with piercing projection that could cut through steel armour-plating. The Snow White of Amy Coombes is full of girlish charm, combining most effectively in romance and song with the Prince of Lewis Cook. Deiniol Wyn Rees lends strong support as Odd Job, as do Calum Small, Travis Monks-Landeg and Josh Phillips among the dwarfs. The attractive dancers for the Blackwood season of the four-month tour are from New Cottage Dance Centre.
Music is provided by Nigel Hart on keyboards and Ray Dizon on percussion.
