Clive King’s engaging tale, about a boy who discovers a caveman living in the local chalk pit turned dump, is brought vividly to life in the Tabard’s imaginative production.
Considering the venue’s size, Jason Denvir’s picturebook perfect set represents a design feat. Using raised platforms, the safe domestic world sits cosily above an impressively realised chalk pit, decorated in detail with debris and framed by suspended jam jars with fairylights.
Adam Colborne is endearing as boy hero Barney and Amy Edge makes a nicely taunting sister, while Jonathan Ryan delights the audience with his grunting, inquisitive Stig. The comic posturing of the Snargets, played by Matthew Fraser Holland, Ivan Berry, Matt Harrison, ensure they are a crowd pleaser - indeed, these three performers excel in each of their multiple roles.
Under Russell Labey’s direction, combined with Katie Beard’s choreography and Leon Parris’ original score, the audience’s attention is held throughout. The children seem genuinely delighted by the tale, and the occasional unexpected contributions from eager viewers provide some of the biggest laughs of the night. This is fine festive fare that will appeal to all the family.
