The Haunted Commode

With surely one of the season’s most strangely beguiling titles, Eastern Angles doesn’t disappoint with its two hour romp.

The plot contains five separate stories evolving from a chance meeting by five assorted characters on Hadesworth (get it?) Station in what look likes very pre-Beeching days. But rest assured that no ancient joke remains buried, no pun is left to wither. It’s all a huge delight and, even after what must have been a very, very hectic rehearsal schedule, the cast of five give every impression of enjoying it hugely too.

Caruthers’ Story takes place in twenties Egypt and with characters like Lady Wetsam-Daly, Gunter Lunchfarter and Ank-er-Saweh, Julian Harries, Louise Shuttleworth, Tracy Elster and Nicholas Agnew have much fun with silly voices while supporting two wobbly palm trees. And all the time Simon Nock is secreted in a tomb bringing to life a puppet - a mummified dog whose every growl and snatch at the sausages is hysterical.

Stephanie Baguet provides the atmospheric designs while Pat Whymark’s songs and music ensure it all goes with a swing. Highly recommended.
