Plaza Suite

Theatregoers who remember Issy Van Randwyck’s bubbly and mischievous contribution to five years of the singing comedy trio Fascinating Aida certainly won’t be disappointed by her latest offering.

A talented actress as well as a singer and comedian, she fairly fizzes on stage in Neil Simon’s biting but hilarious comedy, playing not just one but all three women who inhabit Suite 719 of the Plaza Hotel, New York at different times during 1968.

Each woman is very different and Van Randwyck flits with ease from a devoted wife to a giggly suburban blonde and, finally, a hysterical mother.

But she’s not the only star of the show. Terence Booth is every bit her match, playing in turn humourless husband, womanising Hollywood producer and controlling father. They spark off each other, causing the audience to gasp with horror one moment, be moved almost to tears the next or, as in the final vignette which borders on the slapstick, roar with laughter.

Ably assisted by newcomers Kelly Hotten and local lad Jonathan Niton, Plaza Suite is a comedy with real substance, directed by actor Anthony Valentine who proves that he is just as happy - and capable - behind the scenes.
