This spectacular production really takes off, in more ways than one, with an amazing twister scene that incorporates sensational visual and sound effects. It creates a very noticeable buzz of excitement within the whole theatre and gets its own very deserved round of applause. I have never seen a production of The Wizard of Oz that comes anywhere near this masterpiece.
The show is laden with star performers, all of whom make an impact and, more impressively, work together as a very formidable team. I just wish the yellow brick road had been even longer, such was the impact of their trip to the Emerald City. Matthew Kelly, yet again, proves he is an accomplished and talented performer, whatever the role. In this instance he is very impressive as the Wicked Witch of the West. Many of the audience left the theatre wondering just how he disappeared in one particular scene.
Russ Abbot is another trouper who makes the most of playing Tinman. Delightfully visual, Abbot really brings the character to life. Gregor Fisher clearly enjoys playing the Lion and the audience quickly picks up on this. His energetic portrayal is most amusing. Gary Wilmot, another veteran of many hit shows, is superbly cast as Scarecrow and makes an impression with his singing. Lucy Gill, Lydia Griffiths’ understudy, does extremely well as Dorothy.
There are several brilliant company numbers and a very accomplished 12 piece orchestra under the baton of Adrian Turner.
This brand new and exciting production could be set for many other theatres during the next few festive seasons. My only slight concern is that it may be too clever and sophisticated for very young children.
