The ball scene encapsulates the spirit and appeal of this Cinderella - romantic Regency dances, the bickering Ugly Sisters stumble in, Prince Charming and the mystery girl are introduced, and then they all perform the Grease songs You’re the One That I Want and Hand Jive. Fairy tale tradition, broad humour, punchy popular songs combine as youthful actors give their absolute all. The mix is just right.
Choreographer Jessica Francis, who also doubles as a fetching Fairy Godmother, has everyone moving with sweet precision on what is a restrictive stage.
The pairings in the cast are key to the show’s success. Matthew Daines and Jamie Anton are beastly and belligerent but never vicious as the Ugly Sisters. James Gordanifar and Oli Sills have lots of jolly exchanges as Prince Charming and Dandini. Scott Worsfold as Buttons and Aimee Donnelly as Cinderella bring out the best in each other.
Robin Davies has, for the umpteenth time at the City Varieties, put together a script with charm and brash, irreverent humour. He knows his audience.
What a splendid walk down there is to enjoy - quite the prettiest and most magical that this reviewer has seen so far this Christmas.
