UK Productions at Pavilion Bournemouth, has produced a perfect Christmas package. Sleeping Beauty is a pantomime of glittering romance, beautiful ballet and colourful comedy - the performers, costumes, sets, and music simply a knockout. The story begins with the adorable Malandra Burrows flying in as the ultra-fluffy Fairy Snow Flake fighting the evil Bodybag, played by Helen Fraser, a heckling example of, “Anybody who hates children… can’t be all that bad!”
Helen Fraser (Bodybag) in Sleeping Beauty at the Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth
A traditional princess, the striking Stephanie McWilliams and dashing Prince, the hunky Tim Bonser, both sing superbly, playing the romance for real in sets dusted with silver and fluttering with little fairies from the Stage Door School.
The colourful comedy dressed to match is in the hands of a terrific trio - Andrew Ryan, one of the best Dames in modern pantomime (his staircase tumble in platform boots and mini-skirt a tour de force), a very Silly Billy, Christopher Pizzey, and the Kookiest of Kings, David Alcock. Little twists on traditional slapstick sketches and gags show thoughtful direction by Andrew Ryan. But the thrill of the night was the Prince’s journey flying to the future to save his love, Accolade’s projected images of stratosphere, comets and fire breathing dragons bringing pantomime bang up to date.
