Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Published Monday 17 December 2007 at 11:45 by John Hannam

Experience is so vital in current pantomime productions and the Kings Theatre trio of Lorraine Chase, Aiden J Harvey and Phil Randall make this Snow White a memorable production that never lacks pace. The fun the whole company produce is appreciated by both the audience and the cast. It’s so obvious just how much they enjoy working together. After the scares of the past few years, what a joy to see nearly 900 at the press night.

Lorraine Chase, as the Wicked Queen, is an ultimate professional. She knows exactly how to make the most of her key role and the boos start from her first entry. Luton Airport gets just one mention and there are the odd references to Emmerdale, but this confident portrayal just proves her versatility.

Aiden J Harvey, as Muddles, is the driving force behind this production. He’s got just as much energy and fun as when he won New Faces back in 1974. The youngsters love him and his skill, timing and clever comedy is much appreciated by the adults. He also sings a little more these days. Phil Randall with his immaculate timing is quite wonderful as Sarah the Cook. His wardrobe seems endless, adding so much to the comedy.

At times, Aussie soap star Mark Raffety (Prince Valentine) still seems just a little bemused by British pantomime, but works particularly well with Harvey. The cast is completed by Sophie McDonnell (Snow White), her seven impressive little helpers and Dan Styles (Huntsman). As ever, the enthusiastic dancers are well choreographed by Cheryl Proudlock.
