Theatre Royal pantomimes are invariably lavish but this year’s production of Cinderella has to be the most spectacular yet.
Aggie MacKenzie and Kim Woodburn in Cinderella at the Theatre Royal, Brighton
The sets and costumes, designed by Terry Parsons, have so much colour and sparkle, they take one’s breath away as does the scene in the forest when the six members of the chorus appear as various animals.
Television names dominate the cast with Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie, of How Clean is Your House? fame, as the Ugly Sisters with outrageous costumes enhanced by yellow rubber gloves and Laura Hamilton from the children’s TV channel Nickelodeon, as Cinderella.
Star names may bring in the customers, but invariably the seasoned pantomime performers carry the show and they certainly do on this occasion with the superb Jon Clegg as Buttons establishing instant rapport with the audience from his very first entrance. Dave Lynn as the Wicked Stepmother looks so gorgeous in the most ravishing outfits that even the children find it hard to boo him! Ben Redfern makes a delightful Dandini along with Jorden Bird as Prince Charming and Nicholas Evans as Baron Hardup.
Liza Pulman copes admirably with what is surely pantomime’s least rewarding role, that of the Fairy Godmother.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
