A Christmas Carol

Published Thursday 14 December 2006 at 13:00 by John Hannam

A truly remarkable show from Forest Forge. How could they possibly even attempt Dickens’ classic story with just a company of four? Nothing is ever impossible for this New Forest-based group. From the opening carol singing until I’d Never Thought I’d See The Day, which heralds a wonderful climax, this production is sheer joy and, at times, very emotional.

The company has also been quite clever in including two puppet characters, Charlie and Dickie, and they guide the younger members of the audience through the outline of the story and provide fun and laughter for all ages. They are Muppet-like and prove a hit with everyone.

The cast are simply magnificent. They play at least 16 characters between them and some are created centre stage, with just a hat or something equally simple. They act, move props, harmonise superbly, play instruments and operate the puppets. Many of today’s overpaid television performers just wouldn’t cope.

Jonathan Jones is a memorable Scrooge and he injects so much into the role with skill, energy and realism. Tom Jude, Laura Penneycard and Chris Talman defy belief with their sheer hard work and ability to interchange so beautifully. They all make an impact in a variety of roles.

The songs and music of Richard Emerson, which make an instant impact, play such an important part in the success of this brilliant production.
