Resemblance to real life might be “totally coincidental” according to the disclaimer in the programme for Menno Kuijper’s spot-on comedy about Gaydar, the gay internet dating site. But it is no coincidence that the packed houses are laughing in recognition at nearly every sketch of the show. And those sketches which are rather further from real life - such as a pair of grannies taking over a young lad’s computer to peruse pictures on Gaydar profiles - still hit the funnybone head on.
Being gay or having been on Gaydar is not a prerequisite for enjoyment, either. This is the comedy of instant sexual gratification, of having what you want available when you want it. It is also the comedy of being able to hide behind your computer, creating a public picture of how you would like to be, rather than who or how you are.
The step change in attitudes brought about by computer dating is illustrated in what is the show’s key sketch - of men acting in a bar in the same way they would online. Leaving such analytic details aside, this is a very strong revue, with new words for old musical numbers, much campery and plenty of very dirty jokes, all slickly portrayed by a solid and professional comedy team.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
