Lucy loves Steve but Steve is gay and when they escape to Australia on an ill-timed holiday he falls for a cowboy bartender. This facile tale of gay love narrated by two drag queens, Bo Toxic and Crystal Meth, fails on many levels, not least its script, the humour and intelligence of which may well have been written down on the back of a beer mat after a long night out with the lads, if Dylan Costello’s resume is anything to go by.
Add to this its clunky direction from Lorrie Sheehy and a cast that seem only slightly less embarrassed by the play than the audience, Flip have found a true recipe for theatrical disaster. There are a couple of performances that merit at least passing mention in that Anna-Maria Everett appears to revel in her role as the man-eating Varni and Ashley Callum as the only believable character in this melee, Harvey. As if to atone for this distinction, the director has dressed Callum in shiny hot-pants and a cowboy hat.
It is an interesting point to question whether or not this play would be any better in other hands although it seems highly unlikely that anyone should bother.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
