Everything is as it should be in David McNeil’s version of the traditional fairytale, with a transformation scene to be envied on a stage with no sophisticated equipment,. The settings and costumes, with one exception, provide the glamour, glitter and colour. The ballroom setting lacks that wow factor, unfortunately.
However, that criticism apart, lots of carefully chosen songs, excellent dance routines and fast-paced comedy from the sartorially challenged Ugly Sisters Trinny and Susannah - Neil Armstrong and director David McNeill standing in for an indisposed Donald Scott - ensure that this production upholds the true pantomime tradition.
A celebrity cast led by Isla St Clair as a sparkling Fairy Godmother, Catherine Le Brun as a loveable Cinderella, a macho Prince Charming from Paul Hemming and Danielle Carson’s superb Baroness Cruella - giving a show-stopping performance of Mama from Chicago - blends seamlessly with local performers. Robbie Dee is outstanding as the children’s favourite, Buttons. No doubt instructed to attack from the outset, Dee did just that, having the large audience in the palm of his hand within minutes.
