Things are not going too well at the North Pole as the current Father Christmas begins a reign of terror aimed at killing off all the other holiday spirits and make it Christmas every day of the year. While attempting to avert this disaster, a hapless elf is banished to London and makes friends with a couple of families who find the Christmas holiday a mixed blessing.
It would be easy to suggest that KIT Productions has cobbled together a whole host of well known Christmas songs and threaded them through a Yuletide fairytale but what raises it beyond this level is Richard Marsh’s exceptionally sharp, witty and at times poignant libretto and a host of ebullient performances to rival any pantomime this year.
The numbers have been skilfully arranged by Paul Tarry and Darren Reeves to weave in and out of the story, and the cast of zany characters appear wholly original.ÊAnthony Clegg’s Santa is menacing, lewd and delightfully wicked juxtaposed to the lovable elf, Nick, played by Bennett Andrews. Among the host of immortals there is a hysterical performance by the very talented Laura Checkley as a victimised Easter Bunny, a Glaswegian Frosty the Snowman and an evil vampire, while the mortals’ story dwells on two star-crossed lovers played with gusto by Daniel Reeves and Hannah Spearitt.
The company as a whole appear to be thoroughly enjoying themselves and this, combined with snappy choreography from Kate Prince and a bunch of seasonal No 1 hits are a surefire recipe for Christmas success.
