Gareth Jones

The Stage

Born on April 1, 1948, Gareth Jones passed away on March 7 at the London Hospital in Whitechapel after a brain haemorrhage at the end of January. He was 61.

Gareth Jones was principal baritone with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, which he joined in 1973. He was then part of the opening season of the New D’Oyly Carte in 1988 and worked with them on and off until they finally closed at the Savoy a few years ago. He features on many of their recordings – most notably Cox and Box. He also appeared in the television drama Joyce in June playing opposite Stephen Rea and Gabriel Byrne. Repertory seasons include Worthing, Plymouth and Exeter.

He was also in Phantom of the Opera, playing Monsieur Firman for some years, and he covered George Hearn and played Albin in La Cage Aux Folles at the Palladium. Recently he was in the Tommy Steele production of Scrooge at the Palladium and worked regularly with the Carl Rosa Opera Company. He had also sung regularly at Grimsdyke, the home of W S Gilbert, and on many concert platforms throughout the world. Last Christmas he was seen playing Father Christmas on the Ant and Dec Christmas Show.

He leaves behind a wife, Esther, and his son, David, from a previous marriage, and more good friends than it is possible to mention.
