BBC1 is to screen a one-off drama about comedy duo Laurel and Hardy.
The 90-minute biopic, called Stan and Ollie, is written by Jeff Pope, who penned Mrs Biggs for ITV. It is based around the duo’s 1953 tour, during which Hardy suffered a heart attack.
BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore described Pope’s drama as “a poignant single film about one of Britain’s best-loved double acts”.
Shane Allen, BBC controller of comedy commissioning, added: “Stan and Ollie is Jeff’s love letter to two pioneers and enduring giants of screen comedy. It beautifully captures the deep emotional bond forged over a lifelong partnership as they reflect on their rollercoaster careers through the prism of this final UK farewell tour.”
The drama is a co-production between BBC in-house comedy, BBC Worldwide and Lookout Point.
Casting has yet to be confirmed.
