Bizet’s opera Carmen is to be retold in a contemporary Bollywood style as part of a live event on BBC3.
Bollywood Live will be filmed from the centre of Bradford and has been described by the broadcaster as a “one-hour spectacular” that will feature “romance, music, intrigue and drama”.
The show will follow a character called Karmen who is described as a “wannabe dancer obsessed with movie stardom”.
BBC3 announced the programme today alongside In the Flesh, a three-part drama written by Dominic Mitchell about zombies being reintegrated into society.
The writer was discovered through Northern Voices, a BBC Writersroom initiative.
Meanwhile, BBC3 will also broadcast Sweat the Small Stuff, a new panel show hosted by Nick Grimshaw, and a second series of satirical programme The Revolution will be Televised.
Zai Bennett, the controller of BBC3, said the commissions demonstrate the channel’s “commitment to bold, thought-provoking programmes”.
