Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds has staged its last performance before undergoing a £5.1 million restoration to recreate its original Georgian design.
The theatre will be closed for 18 months during the work, which also involves installing a new bar and restaurant, an exhibition space, new toilets, better ventilation and heating systems and improved wheelchair access.
After the last performance the audience took part in an auction of theatre memorabilia including auditorium seats, foyer furniture, costumes and stage curtains. Claire Glazebrook, development manager, said: “The auction generated a sum of £7,000, which is another step towards our final target. We have now raised a total sum of £4.4 million, which is fantastic. We are very grateful to everybody who helped us get this far and have an exciting programme of fundraising events and activities in store to help us raise the final £700,000.”
Theatre Royal productions will be staged in venues around Bury St Edmunds during the restoration of the Grade I listed building.
