Doctor Who enlists Coupling and League of Gentlemen creators
Creator of the hit BBC2 sitcom Coupling Steven Moffat and League of Gentlemen star Mark Gatiss will join Russell T Davies in penning the revival series of Doctor Who.
Queer as Folk writer Davies will lead the script team on the new BBC1 series, the first since 1996, but the Corporation has decided to enlarge the number of writers after being inundated with requests.
Paul Cornell, the writer of several Doctor Who novels, and Rob Shearman, who penned three radio stories of the hit sci-fi show, will both create one episode each.
BBC controller of continuing drama series Mal Young said: “I have never received so many requests from writers and actors to be involved in a drama series. It seems everyone wants to be a part of bringing back to BBC1 such an iconic series. Davies was always everyone’s first choice but now we are thrilled to have assembled a truly stellar team of writing talent.
Filming on the series, which will be produced by Phil Collinson, is due to start in the spring for transmission in 2005. Casting details are as yet unconfirmed but Anthony Head, Eddie Izzard and Alan Davies have all been linked to the lead role.
