Former BBC director-general John Birt has branded British television drama stereotypical and formulaic and said viewers now had to look to films such as Paul Haggis’ Crash and Sideways by Alex Payne for “authored” work. It has also emerged that executives at some of the UK’s leading production companies agree with him about the poor health of the genre on the small screen.
