Mike Reid to return to EastEnders after three year break

Published Monday 8 August 2005 at 11:35 by Liz Thomas

Mike Reid is to return to BBC1 flagship soap EastEnders at the end of the year after a three year absence.

Reid, who first appeared as Frank Butcher in Albert Square in 1987, will reprise his character for daughter Janine’s murder trial. It will be the second time he has come back to the show. After quitting in 2000 complaining of exhaustion, he made a brief return in 2002.

A spokesman for EastEnders said: “He is only back for the duration of the trial but while he is there his presence ruffles a lot of feathers.”

He is the latest in a list of old faces the soap has enlisted to return in a bid to boost ratings. Barbara Windsor, Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden are also back for stints on the show.

BBC executives also announced a new character is to join the soap in December when Matt Di Angelo stars as Deano Wicks.
