Matthew Bourne has announced details of his long-awaited dance adaptation of the Tim Burton film Edward Scissorhands.
Devised, directed and choreographed by Bourne, the production will open at Sadler’s Wells on November 30 for an 11-week run, before touring nationally. Original music for the piece has been composed by Terry Davies, who recently worked with Bourne on Play Without Words and The Car Men. Prior to Sadler’s Wells, the show will run at the Plymouth Theatre Royal from November 14 to 19.
• Toby Young, critic and author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, is to return to the London stage with his second play Who’s the Daddy?, a farce about David Blunkett’s affair with Kimberley Quinn.
Penned by Young and fellow Spectator journalist Lloyd Evans, the production will be housed at the King’s Head in Islington with previews from July 14 and running until August 28. Lloyd Evans commented: “We’re hoping David Blunkett will come along on press night. Normally, the King’s Head doesn’t allow dogs in the audience but we’ve applied for a special dispensation from Islington council to allow guide dogs in.”
• Joseph Fiennes is to star in Epitaph for George Dillon at the Comedy Theatre in September.
The production will be the first major revival of the play by John Osborne since its premiere at the theatre in the late fifties. It was co-written with Anthony Creighton, who died earlier this year. Producer Matthew Mitchell said: “Joseph has been looking to do some theatre for a while and the lead role is a terrific part for an actor. It’s like an English version of Death of a Salesman.”
• The National Theatre’s autumn/winter season will feature new plays by Mike Leigh and Howard Brenton and an adaptation of the award-winning children’s book Coram Boy by Jamila Gavin.
The venue will also host revivals of Henrik Ibsen’s Pillars of the Community and George S Kaufman and Moss Hart’s Once in a Lifetime as well as a new production from physical theatre company DV8 - Just for Show.
