West End theatres enjoyed record receipts of £341 million during 2004, according to the Society of London Theatre, with the normally difficult drama market seeing sales rising by 3%.
With box office revenue at its highest since the eighties, musicals sold 7.3 million tickets, accounting for two thirds of the market, while almost 3 million people attended drama. Chief executive of SOLT Richard Pulford said that predictions for 2005, with a number of big openings expected, were even more optimistic.
