Scottish arts minister Patricia Ferguson and producer Cameron Mackintosh have invited proposals for a new musical to be staged at the Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.
Mackintosh has joined the Scottish Executive in funding The Highland Quest, a competition to find a piece of new musical theatre to mark the Highland Year of Culture in 2007. The winning entry will be performed at the newly refurbished 250-seat theatre, which is undergoing a £15 million redevelopment project, before touring the region.
The Highland Quest will cost £250,000 and Mackintosh has contributed £75,000 to the contest through his charity, the Mackintosh Foundation. He will also judge the entries, together with lyricist and director Anthony Drew and composer and musical director George Stiles.
It is hoped that the competition will uncover new writing talent. Mackintosh said: “We are looking for an exciting new musical which audiences in the Highlands and beyond will embrace.”
Colin Marr, director of Eden Court, the only large-scale performing arts venue in the Highlands, said: “I am really excited about seeing the submissions. It will be intriguing to see how people interpret the theme of Scottishness and their thoughts on the issues affecting Scotland today.”
The closing date for submissions is April 1 and interested writers should visit www.highland-quest.com.
