Culture minister Richard Caborn was due to announce as The Stage went to press that the number of Las Vegas-style casinos permitted under the controversial Gambling Bill will initially be limited to eight. Studies will be carried out over the next number of years establish their input into regenerating run-down areas and their influence on problem gambling. If these show that the pilot project has produced a positive outcome, the number allowed is expected to increase. Previously the government had been happy for market forces to determine the number of new regional casinos but came under considerable pressure to impose an upper limit.
